The history of painted drumheads began with early cultural decoration, such as henna-painted drums in medieval Spain and Indigenous Andean ceremonial drums in the 1600s. This practice evolved in the late 1800s and early 1900s with pipe bands painting their names on calfskin heads, and by the 1920s, manufacturers created elaborate, hand-painted scenic designs sold in catalogs. The use of synthetic materials like Mylar in the mid-20th century eventually replaced natural skins and made mass-produced, decorated drumheads more feasible.
